He was just surfing the internet in search for a gift for his father-in-law’s birthday when John Arrants came across Continental Micronesia’s Golf Extravaganza on the airline’s website.

Arrants, a computer systems engineer from Georgia, was specifically attracted to the photographs of various golf courses in the Northern Marianas.

The Golf Extravaganza was part of the Continental’s internet promotion to heighten people’s awareness of the Micronesia region among US mainland audiences. When he saw the quiz portion, Arrants immediately signed up and wasted no time answering the three questions: How many years Continental Micronesia has been serving the region? When did the first flight leave? Where is the headquarters located?

Arrants was awarded a four-night, five-day round-trip package for two from the US mainland to Saipan, accommodations at the Hyatt Regency, a round of golf at the Coral Ocean Point, free use of car for the duration of his stay and a round-trip day tour to Guam.

The eight-week Golf Extravaganza contest was made in connection with Continental Micronesia’s 30th anniversary and help in the promotion of the 1999 Visit the Marianas Year campaign.

It was Arrants first trip to Saipan who arrived here with his wife Monica. Although he and his wife’s stay on the island will be very brief, Arrants said they are excited to roam around and explore the island’s beauty.

The Golf Extravaganza promotional site received close to 200,000 visits and over 24,000 actual entries from all over the United States. “We are happy with the great success of the program and the amount of exposure it provided both Micronesia and the airline in a highly sought-after target audience of North America — a market with a healthy disposable income and robust economy,” says Walter Dias, staff vice-president of sales and promotions. “This program is a very good example of industry leaders working together and we look forward to continually partnering with them in the future.”
