Three interns from the mainland and Hawaii are currently working with the community and marked another year of partnership between the Northern Marianas College and Commonwealth Development Authority in bringing in fresh ideas to the local businesses.

Acting Business Development Center Director Eric Plinske said 10 interns are expected to arrive this year through CDA funding. From this group, a pair of interns will each be assigned to Tinian and Rota.

Currently, intern Nathan Gray is reviewing the legal policy and procedure of CDA’s commercial and agricultural loans. He recently completed his law degree from the University of California at Davis.

Another intern Christopher Holst has been assigned to help two businesses involved in marketing agricultural products on Saipan. He is likewise a fresh graduate, earning his Masters in Business Administration from the Washington State University.

Holst will be helping both establishments develop business plans and evaluate existing marketing strategies.

This month, Eugenia Smith from the MBA program of the University of Hawaii has joined both interns. She is also assigned on Saipan, working with a new laundromat and a local farmer’s market. Aside from assisting both new entrepreneurs to polish their respective business plans, she will also help them explore the financing option.

Past interns assigned on Rota made a study on packaging and manufacturing of produce like sweet potato, taro and cassava. While another law graduate intern submitted a report supporting CNMI’s claim of its submerged lands.

According to Plinske, BDC is expecting seven more interns for the year and two are scheduled to arrive end of June. The internship program offers the opportunity for NMC students to work with each intern while earning college credits.
