Filipino workers are invited to join SSS
The Social Security System of the Philippine government is inviting Overseas Filipino Workers to continue their monthly contributions and avail of its medical, pension and loan benefits.
According to the information sent to the Philippine Consulate here, OFWs can now apply for voluntary membership with SSS.
Eligible for the voluntary SSS membership are those Filipino workers who are under 60 years old and whose monthly contributions were interrupted by separation from previous employment.
They are asked to submit proof of their birth, baptismal certificate or passport, and marriage contract if applicable. For those who will be listing names of their children as beneficiaries, legal certifications are needed to support their relationship with the member.
Since no SSS center has been established in the CNMI, Filipinos are invited to apply in writing to its main office located at the East Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City. Likewise, SSS has maintained its web site since last year for faster access to information (www.sss.gov.ph). This web site has reportedly been visited by over 40,000 surfers.
Members of SSS are entitled to monetary benefit pertaining to sickness, disability, retirement and death. They can also avail of its salary, education, calamity, housing and business loans.
Recently, SSS offered its emergency loans to workers who were retrenched amounting to P12,500 and has likewise increased its salary loan to P15,000. It also reduced its interest rate from 12 to 6 percent each year.
The SSS has deployed representatives in the Philippine Embassies in Riyadh and Rome, and in its Consulate offices in Hong Kong and Jeddah. It has also maintained centers in Taipei and in Kaoshiung, Taiwan.
The SSS is scheduled to open its center in Brunei, Milan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore this year.
