The Board of Regents of the Northern Marianas College has approved the release of $160,000 to complete the process of upgrading its computer system by acquiring Y2K-compliant hardware, board chairman Ramon Villagomez said Friday.

NMC has started upgrading its system, but during Friday’s meeting the board agreed to push back the implementation of the new system until October, when the employees are completely prepared for it.

“We can’t be doing these things without proper training,” said NMC president Agnes McPhetres.

In the meantime, she said the college would have to go back to the old system “while we are learning how to deal with the new system.”

McPhetres said in the past months, NMC’s business office was inundated with work as it tried to cope with the new system.

As a result, she said, “people at the business office were behind by six weeks” causing a halt to the transactions at the finance office.

“We have therefore agreed to continue using the old system until the end of fiscal year until were are ready,” McPhetres said.
