The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District, and the Agency for Toxic and Disease Registry will hold a public availability session on Oct. 21, 1999 at the Aqua Resort Club between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to discuss the Tanapag polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) cleanup project and any related health concerns.

Officials from both agencies welcome members of the public to discuss and gain information regarding progress and future plans for the cleanup project. The Army Corps of Engineers completed three cleanup operations within Tanapag village from 1992 to 1999.

As of 1997, all contaminated soil from the village was removed to the processing treatment next to the industrial area. In a health evaluation follow-up, the Corps of Engineers studied the area in 1998 and concluded that no public health anomalies resulted from the PCB canisters found within the village.

The Corps of Engineers is currently reviewing ways to remove and treat the remaining PCB-contaminated soil in the cemetery located near the industrial complex.

As a temporary measure, the Corps will place a cap to seal any contaminated soil until the actual cleanup for Phase III is initiated. A contract for Phase III is scheduled for award by June 2000.
