Marianas Baptist Academy came up on top at the 6th Annual Mathcounts Chapter Competition held Saturday at the Multipurpose Center.

MBA’s Team A has won the event for the sixth time. Its Team B placed second, and Mount Carmel Team A finished third.

The top three individual winners were Faye Yu, Mina Yu and Vidhaya Venugopol, all from MBA. They were followed by Byung Hwang, Dean Palacios, John Heung Yang, Hyun Joo Lizama, Andrew Moses, Carmelita Coelho, and Steve Zhao to round up the top 10.

Ninety-six junior high students from 11 schools from Saipan, Rota and Tinian took part in Saturday’s competition.

CNMI coordinator Paul K. Baron said he was impressed with the turnout of this year’s competition and with the individual scores.

“This year’s individual scores were the highest since Mathcounts competition began six years ago,” he said.

Each school will now select eight students to advance to the Commonwealth Championship which will be held on March 25, 2000 at the Pacific Gardenia Hotel Banquet Room. The top four winners from the championship will go to Washington, D.C. in May for the National Championship.
