Japanese lawmaker leads business mission in NMI
A member of Diet, Japan’s parliament, is set to visit the CNMI next week to meet with Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio and members of the Legislature to discuss fresh business and investment opportunities for the island, according to officials.
Legislator Tokuo Yamashita will be accompanied by Tsuneo Shimoji, chairman of Japanese Entrepreneur President’s Association (JEPA) and other officials and members of the group during the three-day visit beginning on March 16.
Others in the delegation include Kyoko Yamashita, Rei Yamashita and Daisuku Matsumura of JEPA, said Rep. Norman S. Palacios.
House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial appointed Mr. Palacios, chair of the Federal and Foreign Relations Committee, to draw up preparation for the Japanese delegation’s visit which he said will enable the island government to explore possibility of enhancing business ties with Tokyo.
To help him, Mr. Palacios selected Representatives Florencio T. De Leon Guerrero and William S. Torres to be part of the ad-hoc committee which will coordinate with MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio and a representative from the Governor’s Office.
The House of Representatives recently adopted a resolution endorsing the formation of the Japan/Northern Mariana Islands Parliamentary League of Friendship that will seek to strengthen relations between the two legislatures.
It will specifically promote the long-standing goodwill, friendship, social, economic and cultural bonds between the Japanese and CNMI peoples.
The league was created during the administration of former Gov. Larry I. Guerrero and its reactivation at this time will allow the CNMI to seek assistance from JEPA which has more than 15,000 members to help the island in many sectors, including business and culture, according to the resolution’s author Mr. Palacios.
