Ten students from Tinian High School stunned the competition at the CNMI Mock Trial Championship and walked away with the verdict and rights to attend the National Championships in South Carolina.

The Tinian team, composed of Anthony Aguon, Patricia Aguon, Antonio SN Borja, Farah Cabrera, Natasha Diaz, Abigail Evangelista, Leveriaza Mendiola, Karl Nabors, Sarah Perez and Hee Yeon Rhee, was sponsored by the Tinian Mayor’s Office.

Seven high schools participated in this year’s mock trial competition that also included the Calvary Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Marianas High School, Mt. Carmel High School, Northern Marianas Academy and Rota High School.

This year the NMI Bar Association coordinated the CNMI Mock Trial Championship. The case was the Commonwealth v. Julie Starr and was obtained and modified by the bar association in collaboration with the Colorado Bar Association.

“The entire community of Tinian is extremely proud of our students for placing first and I am sure our students will make everyone proud as we take on the responsibility of representing the Commonwealth during the national championships,” said Tinian Mayor Francisco Borja.

The Mayor’s Office and the Tinian Mock Trial Team, are currently seeking ways to finance the trip to South Carolina. Individuals wishing to help raise funds may contact Loren Sutton at the Tinian Mayor’s Office or Janet King at the Tinian Municipal Council.
