NEH Fellowships and Summer Stipends

NEH Fellowships and Summer Stipends are now being offered at the National Endowment for the Humanities. The NEH Fellowship Stipends are awards that provide for six to 12 months of full-time work on a project that will make a significant contribution to thought and knowledge in the humanities.

The Fellowships program has two categories: 1) University and College Teachers; and. 2) Independent scholars. Stipends vary in amount due to length of grant period: 1) up to $30,000 for grant period of from nine to 12 months; and 2) up to $24,000 for grant period of from six to eight months.

Summer Stipends are awards provided to support two months of full-time work on projects that will make a significant contribution to the humanities. Prospective applicants must be nominated by their respective institutions: colleges/universities.

Individuals employed in non-teaching capacities in colleges and universities and individuals not affiliated with colleges and universities do not require nomination and may apply directly. Adjunct faculty and academic applicants with appointments terminating by the Summer of 2001 may also apply directly. A stipend of $4,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens, native residents of U.S. jurisdictions or legal residents of the U.S.

Application deadlines are as follows: The NEH Fellowships is May 1, 2000 and the Summer Stipend is October 1, 2000.
