In support of Continental

This is to follow up on the Tribune’s April 19th editorial, “Need for Lasting Partnership”, which brought attention to the need for more ‘tolerance and maturity’ in regards to our islands’ relationship with Continental Micronesia.

As the CNMI Coordinator of the MathCounts program, I am writing in support of Continental Micronesia. If not for the generosity and continued assistance of Continental Micronesia, the MathCounts program could not send the islands’ brightest math students to compete in the annual National Competition in Washington, D.C

For the past six years, Continental Micronesia has assisted with roundtrip airline tickets for the MathCounts’ students, coach and coordinator. Continental Micronesia has also contributed to dozens of other worthy causes ranging from academic programs similar to MathCounts to the Red Cross fundraiser and the Children of the World Foundation.

The airline industry is a business that has a fluctuating margin of profit, and with the state of the economy the past few years, we are fortunate to have a steady air carrier in our region, especially for the past 32 years.
Even with the losses, Continental Micronesia has restructured while trying to best serve the Commonwealth.

Let us not shoot ourselves in the foot. Instead, we should turn all the negative criticism to constructive solutions. In order to encourage other airlines or businesses to invest in our region, we need to show our ability to find solutions and to be more open-minded.
