Saipan triathletes to compete in Cairns
Continental Airlines is sending Keren Miers and Zaan Claassens to compete in the Cairns Half Ironman Triathlon this Saturday, June 10, 2000 in Cairns, Australia. As the major sponsor of the Tagaman Triathlon, Continental agreed to provide two tickets for the top male and female athletes from the NMI to participate in the Cairns Half Ironman. Keren was the 16th male to finish in 3:38.22, and Zaan, 9th for the women in 3:53.33. Other expenses will be paid by themselves.
Zaan and Keren will be joined by fellow Saipan triathletes who also opted to participate in this upcoming event. They are Rena Carlson, who placed 11th and has also qualified for the Korea Iron in July, Kathryn Sinclair who was 15th, and Nicole Forelli who was 20th in the Tagaman. Also, Peter Sinclair, who finished 41st will be joining them. Peter competed in the New Zealand Ironman a few years ago and has done several Tagamans, in addition to being one of the top NMI tennis players, winning the Gold in the 1998 Micronesian Games in Palau. All have competed in numerous runs and triathlons in Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
It is the hope of Taga Inc. to work closely with other major triathlons in the region to promote each others events and work with Continental Airlines to make these events more accessible.
The next big triathlon in the NMI will be the Rota Blue Triathlon on November 18, 2000. The next run on Saipan will be the 7th Annual Silver Streak.
