Recognizing their contributions to the upliftment of their country’s image through their hardwork and the economic benefits of their remittances, the Philippine government has designated June 7, 2000 the Migrant Filipino Workers’ Day.

Celebrations were held in countries throughout the world with concentration of Filipino workers who have been officially called the country’s new breed of heroes for their role in building a more resilient Philippines.

The celebration was highlighted by the awarding of 10 outstanding Filipino migrant workers from all over the world, including Tan Holdings Corporation comptroller Eli Arago, in Malacanang Palace by President Joseph Estrada for their exemplary deeds and accomplishments.

Philippine Consul Julia C. Heidemann said the 2000 was declared the Year of the Overseas Filipino workers in recognition of each of the migrant Filipino’s sheer determination and courage to carve a name not only for himself but also for his country.

“[It is not] an act of self interest but of untiring effort to contribute to the country’s development and progress. The proclamation is aptly supplemented by the slogan Angat Pilipino 2000,” said Ms. Heidemann during the Saipan celebration Wednesday night at the Pacific Islands Club.

She mentioned efforts by the Philippine government under the Angat Pilipino 2000 to assist the Filipino worker develop and upgrade his skills, and to ensure his competitive advantage in the international labor market.

Ms. Heidemann said the Philippine Consulate here continues to facilitate programs that would give every OFW a chance to improve his and his family’s living condition.

“We campaigned for partnership with the community to bring about a favorable climate and environment to compensate for the social cost of leaving behind one’s native land,” she added.

“As ambassadors of goodwill, you are the mirror of the Filipino people in general. Thus, the preservation of the Filipino spirit is the foremost aspiration. The bayanihan spirit builds character, resiliency, courage and compassion,” the consul told OFWs in the Northern Marianas.

She pointed out Filipino workers in the Northern Marianas have demonstrated sufficiency of values like patriotism, love of country, nationalism, and care for fellowmen.

Ms. Heidemann also noted the development-conducive environment in the CNMI which, she said, offers sufficient measures particularly on the protection and the welfare of the Filipino worker.

“In the CNMI, we are fortunate that these goals found support from the host government and people. The CNMI provides a favorable environment for us to pursue our dreams, achieve our personal aspirations,” she said. (AR Fajardo)
