Solid waste tipping fees begin on Aug. 14
The Division of Solid Waste Management within the Department of Public Works is informing all island residents that beginning Aug. 14 2000, tipping fees will be assessed at the Puerto Rico Landfill.
Tipping fees are charges assessed for the disposal of solid waste at landfills and are a common, necessary, and responsible component of integrated solid waste management systems worldwide.
The fees are volume-based and have been set on a base fee rate of approximately $10 per ton using standard volumetric solid waste conversions. Small loads of less than one cubic yard in volume or contained within three or less 55-gallon drums, hauled at a frequency of no more than once per week will be exempt from the new fees.
Relatively clean soil, sand, and concrete construction debris suitable for landfill cover material and clean greenwaste suitable for chipping into mulch will be accepted without being assessed a fee.
Fees are payable with coupons which can be purchased from the Solid Waste Management Office in the DLNR building at Lower Base. Fees of $10.00 or less may be paid in cash.
All fee charges over $10.00 must be paid by pre-purchased coupons or invoiced to an established account.
Accounts are limited to haulers of waste tonnage over 10 tons per day. All commercial waste haulers are required to register with the CNMI Division of Environmental Quality. Such haulers interested in setting up an account should contact the Division of Solid Waste Management.
The new tipping fees will provide the funds needed to protect our environment and to manage our islands’ solid waste more responsibly. Tipping fees will also encourage the diversion of waste from our landfills and will help foster community recycling efforts.
