Visiting officials from the Philippines government yesterday conducted an inspection of the Marianas Variety staff house in Dandan following reports reaching the Manila labor office of the alleged sub-standard living conditions of Filipino workers there.

The inspection of the Marianas Variety barracks, spearheaded by Philippines Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Deputy Administrator Virginia Son, came in the heels of complaints filed by two former employees claiming that conditions at the staff house were below the standards set by the federal government.

While Philippines Labor Undersecretary Felicisimo Joson insisted the inspection of the Marianas Variety staff house was no more than just a visit, he did not say why the company was singled out.

“We don’t want to call it inspection because employers might think that we do not trust them in providing a very good accommodation for their Filipino workers,” Mr. Joson said.

However, reports disclosed the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration received information on the alleged substandard living conditions of Marianas Variety employees in their Dandan barracks.

Sources privy to the inspection said a letter has been mailed to the POEA office in Ortigas, Philippines last month containing description of the company’s staff house.

A complaint previously filed against Marianas Variety mentioned the sad condition of the company barracks in Dandan with some male and female employees living in one house and sharing one bathroom.
