The Pacific Resources for Education and Learning through its PRELstar project is spearheading a training workshop meant to boost professional development in teaching with technology and distance learning.

The workshop is intended for adult educators who are guaranteed to have a deeper understanding of teaching with the use of technology even amid unconventional settings at the end of the training.

Two visiting experts from Hawaii and Washington are on island to facilitate this three-day training at the Northern Marianas College campus from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday through Friday.

Anne Watts of Learning Innovations in Washington and Linda Chung of PREL are aiming to accomplish several objectives through the workshop, mainly to promote the concept of distance learning through the use of different media especially among individuals burdened with various responsibilities in life.

The workshop is also designed to create an awareness among adult educators into thinking differently about a variety number of services to students, identifying learner and regional needs, reviewing reference or resource products, identifying possible products for implementation, developing plans for the implementation and actually constructing timelines and action plan.

Ms. Watts and Ms. Chung yesterday made known to workshop participants the different products and resources currently available for teaching with technology outside traditional classroom walls.

In the region, the experts enumerated the availability of the STEP*Star network program, PBS Literacy Link, Crossroads Cafe, Connect with English, and PALM CD.

Through the worldwide web, instructors can also log into Dave’s ESL Cafe, LitTeacher, Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), NIFL, OTAN, Western Illinois University STARNet, and Edgateway as several references.

Today, workshop trainees are scheduled to break out into groups and discuss remaining topics which will focus on identifying the use of programs and the drafting of a plan.

The activity will dwell on taking advantage of the distance learning delivery mode. (MM)
