The Public School System Capital Improvement Projects team is currently in the process of evaluating bid proposals for the collateral equipment of the Marianas High School gymnasium project, now reportedly 85 percent complete.

Head of construction management Efrain F. Camacho Engineers and Architects, along with contractor Philippine Goods, has recently completed the installation of the metal roof system and insulators of the $1.6 million facility at Saipan’s lone public high school.

Education leaders who conducted an ocular inspection at the construction site last week were pleased at the work progress after being stalled for close to 10 years.

Contractors are in the middle of installing a centralized air-conditioning system for the 25,000-square foot multipurpose fitness facility.

A weekly site progress and evaluation is conducted by the construction managers to ensure the smooth flow of construction in time for its October 2000 deadline.

The facility scheduled to be unveiled on Oct. 29 will highlight a 12,960 square feet court area, a high school standard full basketball court with backstops, four half courts with retractable backstops, and two full volleyball courts with removable nets.

It will also include three classrooms, three physical fitness work out areas, one weight lifting room, lockers rooms, and showers.

The gym’s exterior is also being eyed to accommodate designated areas for outdoor sports such as basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and track.

In October, the gym will boast of an 800 square feet stage which may retract into a six-foot deep recess when not in use.

One of the unique characteristics of the facility is the no-seam resilient high impact floor believed to be easy on the knees, according to EFC.

Furthermore, it is also designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act with a maximum capacity of 1,442 people.

The gym is expected to be more modern than any similar facility on island, according to its contractor.

The concept of erecting the facility started way back in 1991. Leaders have pushed for the expedient work on the project to address the growing number of students at MHS, a necessity for the students’ Physical Education and sports needs. (MM)
