Northern Marianas Housing Corp. Board Chair John S. Tenorio yesterday said tenants in government subsidized housing in Rota and Tinian for low-income families may be able to have their own homes in the future.

At present there are 30 tenants each in Rota and Tinian who have availed of the Section 8 Housing Assistance Program, a federal program for low-income families.

Since some tenants in these houses are even working in government agencies, NMHC will evaluate the financial capability of these people to determine whether they can own the houses they are currently renting.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, NMHC administers the program throughout the Commonwealth. The local housing agency manages more than 100 units located in Saipan, Rota and Tinian under its Section 8 Program.

By 2003, when the agreement with the federal program ends, the people who live in these dwellings may be able to own these houses.
Many of those who are renting houses under the Section 8 Housing Assistance Program have been living there for the last 7 to 10 years.

NMHC has asked the people who have availed of the federal program to carry out repairs of their own houses and not wait for the agency to do it for them.

The housing program has been conducting a series of community outreach programs including regular discussions with homeowners to help them fortify their capabilities to pay outstanding loans, thereby preventing foreclosure.
