Over 75 participants joined the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s first annual fun run foot race Friday afternoon in support of the organization’s scholarship program that benefits hard working CNMI students.

Business leaders and supporters from various groups ran at least three miles from the American Memorial Park and tracked the Garapan area back to AMP in an average of 15 minutes with high hopes of raising $10,000 for the Chamber’s Educational Scholarship Fund.

“This is one of our major fundraising events of the year,” said Chamber president Lynn Knight.

Chamber’s vice president Tony Mosley said the fundraiser has been slated to promote education for the youths.

“The education of our kids is paramount to the development of the Commonwealth. And we are trying to raise money for different ranges of students, depending on their choice,” said Mr. Mosley.

Scholarship funds are usually awarded by the Chamber before the end of the year.

The group has been successful in providing scholarship services to diligent, deserving students over the past years. Just last year, the organization gave away some $4,000 in efforts to create an opportunity for students to compete for educational scholarships.

Companies who have assisted the Chamber in this annual undertaking are the Hyatt Regency Saipan, GTE Pacifica, Pacific Islands Club, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank, Duty Free Shoppers, Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association, and PacifiCare Asia-Pacific.
