Another poker robbery suspect enters plea deal
The last defendant to a poker robbery on Saipan reached a plea agreement yesterday with the federal prosecutors, drawing to a close the case brought against six island residents in the U.S. District Court.
Juan Teigita, 22 years old, was the last to admit responsibility to robbing $2,200 from Sun Poker and LJ’ store in As Matuis during two separate incidents last January.
His accomplices — Joaquin Dela Cruz Cango, 19; Sidney Capelle Kani, 19; Kenneth Dowai, 23; Rodney Demei, 22; and Jeffery Tegei, 21 — have separately entered plea agreements with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Juan will be sentenced in November on two counts of robbery and one count of gun possession.
The charges stemmed from the two incidents, one in Sun Poker where they fled with $2,000 in cash and the other in LJ, stashing away $200. During the robberies, the six defendants harmed and threatened the two establishments’ cashiers.
The island has been hit by a string of robberies since early this year, mostly poker arcades and convenience stores. Authorities fear that these incidents are linked with the growing drug problem here.
