Torres gets 21 yrs. for rape, robbery
Superior Court Associate Judge Timothy H. Bellas yesterday sentenced Mark Wayne Torres to 21 years imprisonment in connection with the robbery and rape of a Chinese hotel worker almost seven months ago.
In ignoring the plea of defense lawyer Paul Lawlor for leniency on his client, Judge Bellas said Mr. Torres, 21, showed very little regard for human life when he continued to beat up the victim as she lay unconscious.
Investigation showed that Xiu-Hong Luo, 32, asked Mr. Torres to give her a ride to the Guma Husticia on Jan. 6, 2000. Instead, the nonresident worker was brought to an area near Kilili Beach where Mr. Torres raped her.
Not contented, Mr. Torres then dumped her to Chalan Kiya Golf Course where the victim was later found wondering in the greens. He even stole the victim’s money and several pieces of jewelry.
Ms. Xiu-Hong, who was hit several times by Mr. Torres, suffered broken cheekbones as well as injuries on the head and neck.
Mr. Lynch said the crime committed by Mr. Torres proves his lack of concern for any human being thus, he poses extreme danger to society. He asked the court to order Mr. Torres to pay for the victim’s medical bills, jewelry, money and wages lost due to her failure to report for work as a result of the incident.
Judge Bellas ordered 20 years imprisonment for robbery but suspended six years and 10 years for rape but suspended three years. A restitution hearing has been scheduled to determine the amount to be paid by the convict.
The prosecution dropped the charges of kidnapping and assault with a dangerous weapon against Mr. Torres after he pled guilty to robbery and rape.
