CNMI marks opening of 16th public school By Marian A. Maraya
CNMI will witness history transpire today as the Public School System finally unveils the $6 million Kagman Elementary School earlier strafed with controversies that range from construction grief to funding woes.
The newly-constructed elementary school is the 16th public campus to be established in the CNMI.
Kagman elementary students will hold their first classes at the 27-classroom campus starting Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Education officials have been looking forward to the facility’s opening after construction deadlines to the school’s completion have repeatedly been pushed back due to numerous concerns.
Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos said the school will open its doors with the very basic operational instruments as it tries to make do with available resources for the meantime.
“The campus will open on September 5 with what it can basically begin with,” said Dr. Inos in an earlier interview.
She has assured all critical positions necessary to run the campus have been put in place as school officials recently met to iron out last minute preparations, finalizing the line up of teachers and staff who would man the school.
“We’re sacrificing in various areas throughout the system so that it can open. But we’re also hoping that relief will come around when the new budget cycle comes in,” she said.
The new school boasts of eight artistically designed buildings, 27 fully-air-conditioned classrooms which can accommodate 25 students per room.
Each building has been furnished with two common toilets. The school also features a 675-capacity cafeterium, a library, and a room to accommodate more than 30 computer units. Students will also be provided their own lockers.
The campus is complete with spacious parking area, a baseball field, and a basketball court.
The structures are built to withstand typhoons as PSS has approved the installation of sophisticated typhoon shutters in all classroom windows.
