The 1st CNMI Tennis open tournament finally closes it’s curtain with lots of good matches during the final day.

It was an astounding match last weekend when the final singles matches event held at PIC and at the American Memorial Park Tennis courts.

“It was the game of the day” said Manny Jaraplasan, former Filata president, as he watched the men’s open championship last Sunday between Todd Montgomery and Toby Evans of PIC.

An exchange of solid ground strokes and overhead smashes were seen from the first set until the final round of the game that made every point a really interesting one to see.

The men’s open match ended with 6-1/6-3 straight set score by Todd Montgomery against Toby Evans of PIC.

Meanwhile, in the women’s open, Kana Aikawa made a surprisingly comeback when she lost the first set, 4-6, to Wendy Herring and retaliate with a fast play on the succeeding sets with a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Don Dunlop and Yoko Kobayashi defeated husband and wife Dino and Letty Jones in the mixed open.

In the men’s 2.0, Romy Sotto defeated Perlas Ham, 6-4/6-2, while a 7-5/6-2 for the men’s 3.0 won by Bong Rulona against Didith Julve of Saipan.

Other highlights were the men’s 4.0 singles where Lope Padilla pounded Andrew Math with a 6-3/6-2 score, and a 6-0/6-2 straight set won by Susan Tuano against the newcomer Kathy Pagapular.

This year’s major Filata event was sponsored by Jollibee, Earnst & Young, Coca-Cola Beverage Co. (Micronesia), Inc., Saipan Cellular & Paging and Pacific Islands Club.
