Texas Road to serve as alternative route
Texas Road, a stretch of back road in Susupe, is being eyed again as an alternative route to decongest traffic along Beach Road under legislation intended to seek funding for its improvement and development.
Rep. Rosiky F. Camacho, proponent of the plan, said such a project would also provide alternative way for sewer, water and cable lines which will benefit many residents of Chalan Kanoa and Susupe.
The Saipan lawmaker, who chairs the House transportation committee, has solicited comments from several government agencies on HB 12-267 or the “Texas Road Appropriation and Development Act.”
The measure will create a task force to re-assess the viability of such undertaking, as Mr. Camacho noted the Legislature in 1989 came up with an initial study carried out by then Sen. Juan N. Babauta.
“There has been no development since then and this is the time to revive the project,” he told in an interview. “We know what we want and what we need. This has been done.”
Among the steps needed to be taken to push the project, according to Mr. Camacho, are assessment on right-of-way disputes as well as cost of improvement.
“But some people have told me that is now very few obstacles to the project as some residents are willing to provide right-of-way,” he said, adding they believe the project can increase business activities along Texas Road.
The proposed task force will look into other aspects of the project, like construction of sewerline or waterline, which is beneficial to the residents as well, Mr. Camacho pointed out.
