Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Vice-Speaker Alejo M. Mendiola, Jr. wasted no time following up on some of the issues addressed at the recent Nashville speaker’s conference. At the top of their agenda is to bring to the CNMI, an educator from Seattle, Superintendant Joseph Olchefske, to discuss an innovative pilot project in education at Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Olchefske gave a talk on “Rebuilding Trust in the Public Schools” which focused on freedom and discipline at all levels of participation in the schools including parents, teachers, principals and students. He also talked about using technology in education that will help students learn beyond the time barrier of 180 days by extending it to 360 days.

The House leadership will sponsor Dr. Olchefske’s visit to the CNMI. Speaker Fitial and Vice-Speaker Mendiola discussed this opportunity with PSS Commissioner Rita Inos and the PSS Board of Education. Speaker Fitial suggests that Dr. Olchefske has much to share with the CNMI public in terms of reinstating the public trust on public education. Vice-Speaker Mendiola is hopeful that in the future, the legislature will be able to bring to the CNMI new ideas in administration and leadership.
