The Department of Finance, Division of Revenue and Taxation in conjunction with the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, is ready to provide free tax preparation assistance for taxpayers who are qualified to claim additional tax credit. Applications will be available at a one-day tax preparation assistance session on Saturday, Oct. 28th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library in Susupe.

The additional tax credit is generally available to taxpayers who have three or more qualified children under the age of 17, and have paid social security tax, including Medicare, and/or self-employment tax. The credit is $400 for tax year 1998 and $500 for tax year 1999 for each qualified child. Qualified taxpayers may receive a refund of up to the credit limit per taxable limit.

In order to be assisted, taxpayers must bring the following:

• A copy of the 1998 and/or 1999 tax income return filed with the CNMI along with Form(s) W-2;

• Self-employment tax return (Form 1040SS), if 1040SS was filed self-employment tax and was paid to the U.S.;

• Documents to verify dependents including social security cards; and

• If the original return filed was a joint return, both spouses must be present for the form to be completed.

Taxpayers are strongly urged to begin compiling their documents and take advantage of this free assistance. Anyone needing copy of his or her tax return from Revenue and Tax must submit a request ahead of time. Please note that Revenue and Tax charges a fee for copies of tax returns.
