One of the six men convicted on the poker robbery case in the U.S. District Court was sentenced yesterday to two years and 11 months imprisonment.

Sidney Capelle Kani, 19, was also ordered to share in the payment of restitution amounting to $5,900 to three victims of the two robbery incidents that took place last January.

He was the first among the six to be sentenced by District Judge Alex R. Munson following their guilty plea to charges of robbery, conspiracy and illegal possession of firearm.

Sidney’s plea agreement involved two counts of robbery. The judge imposed 35-month jail term for each count that he will serve concurrently.

He will be placed under three years of supervised release once the prison terms ends. He was also ordered to participate in substance abuse program and perform 300 hours of community service.

As part of the plea deal, he was not asked to pay the special assessment fee or $200 or any fine, except for the restitution that will be shouldered by him and three others convicted for the same crime.

Of the $5,900 restitution, $800 will go to Elahi Md. Ashik, $817 for Huang Lin Mei and the rest to Kim You Kyong.

Based on court papers, Sidney, along with five others, robbed Sun Poker of approximately $2,000 after beating its cashier Mr. Ashik on Jan. 6.

They also robbed nearby establishment, LJ’s store, of $200 after pointing a .22 caliber rifle to cashier Ms. Huang on Jan. 26. The store is owned by Mr. Kim.

Juan Dela Cruz Cango, 19; Kenneth Dowai, 23; Juan Teigita, 22; Rodney Demei, 22 and Jeffery Tegei, 21, had also admitted their guilt and are scheduled to be sentenced in the next few weeks.

They were arrested last May by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police after an investigation was conducted on the robberies. (BS)
