Teacher scholarships available
The Public School System is still seeking for three more qualified recipients of the Christa McAuliffe teacher’s scholarship program to complete a total of 10 awards PSS has earmarked for Fiscal Year 2000.
Federal Programs Coordinator Bill Matson said PSS is going for a another round in its information dissemination drive due to the low application turn-ins in the past couple of months.
Three qualified fellowship awardees will each be entitled to $2,500 for individual projects they wish to pursue.
McAuliffe scholars will be awarded federal dollars to be used for either classroom or staff development projects, including assessment projects which must be completed by the end of the school year.
The areas of priority as determined by territory are research on SEA and LEA school improvement plans through local content and performance standards development, and assessment design; applications of learning technologies for classroom use; development of innovative programs; and projects or partnerships that involve the business community and the schools.
The Christa McAuliffe fellowship for teachers is applicable for teachers with at least eight years of classroom teaching experience. Applicants must be able to document these years of service.
The fellowships should be for development expenses with little or no equipment or materials being purchased.
Applications are due on or before Dec. 22, 2000. PSS has so far awarded a total of seven fellowships. Application forms are available at the PSS Federal Programs Office.
The fellowship is named after an American school teacher who died aboard a space challenger that exploded back in the late 80s. (MM)
