JAKARTA, Indonesia ((PIR) — The jailed leader of the pro-independence movement in the Indonesian province of West Papua (Irian Jaya) has arrived in Jakarta for hospital treatment.

An official with Merpati Nusantara Airlines confirmed that Theys Eluay arrived at Jakarta’s international airport on a scheduled flight from the province’s capital, Jayapura, and was taken to a hospital intensive care ward.

The president of the pro-independence Papua Presidium initially was rushed to a local Jayapura hospital from his detention cell on Friday for treatment of an irregular heartbeat and prostate problems.

Mr. Eluay and four other Presidium leaders have been under police custody since early December.

Police are pressing subversion charges against them for advocating independence from Indonesia.
