DYS probes alleged child neglect case

Police last week referred a possible child neglect case to the Division of Youth Services after spotting an infant wandering along Beach Road unsupervised.

A police woman was driving along the main road Thursday morning when she came across a three-year-old boy walking on the shoulder of the highway without adult supervision.

When the law enforcement officer asked the boy where he was heading, the apparently bashful child made no comment.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Cecil Celes said police took custody of the minor and forwarded the case to DYS.

Authorities immediately tracked the child’s guardians.

Late Thursday, the boy was returned to his parents where it was learned that the boy was originally left with his mother’s sister where he was found earlier that day. Apparently, the infant slipped out of his aunt’s company unnoticed.

According to police reports, it was not the guardians’ intention to leave the child unattended.

Workers fight over trash money

A pair of Bangladeshi nationals was caught in a violent quarrel last week over an undisclosed sum of trash collection money, police said.

DPS officers arrested Mohammed Alam for allegedly striking Atigur Rahaman with a strip of hard wood at the non-resident workers’ barracks in Chalan Kanoa Thursday night.

Police said the rough encounter started when the victim confronted the suspect inside his bedroom, asking about his share in the trash collection money.

The verbal diatribes escalated into a physical fight, leaving the victim injured in the facial area.

Police charged Mr. Alam of assault with a dangerous weapon.
