Over a thousand children and adults trooped to La Fiesta San Roque Shopping Plaza Saturday to participate in the highly-anticipated annual Snow Festival where 16 schools competed for the snow-making contest.

Bagging the first prize award was Kagman Elementary School while Garapan Elementary School and San Vicente Elementary School respectively got the nod of judges for second and third places.

La Fiesta General Manager Toshiro Arai disclosed nearly 2,000 people arrived at Jamboree Plaza early Saturday afternoon to witness the yearly competition where children and students get the chance to play with snow flown in by Japan Airlines.

This year’s contest was highlighted by JAL District Manager Yukiharu Enomoto’s call to care for the environment and to preserve the natural resources that Northern Marianas can readily offer.

“Like the snow which is so white, it is so clean, we should take care of the environment and keep the island clean,” the district manager told the crowd.

JAL management also brought in delegates from the Sakuragi Elementary School who demonstrated during the early part of the program how to make a Snowman. JAL was responsible for the arrival of tons of snow from Sapporo, Japan.

Sixteen schools from Saipan, Tinian and Rota competed for the Team Snowman-Making contest where six students from each school were given 30 minutes to come up with a unique and artistic design of the Snowman.

Students of KAG elaborately designed their entry with local fruits and vegetables while SVES colored theirs yellow.

Other schools who competed for the contest were Calvary Elementary School, Dandan Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Saipan and Tinian; Japanese Community School, Mt. Carmel Elementary School, Northern Marianas College Laboratory, Oleai Elementary School, Rota Elementary School, Saipan Community School, Saipan International School, San Antonio Elementary School, and Tanapag Elementary School.

After the contest, La Fiesta opened the Hokkaido Snow exhibit to the public and transformed the Carnival Plaza Fiesta III to an open space for snow ball playing. (EGA)
