It appears the ballot may contain up to six possible candidates for governor. Therefore it is wise to begin considering the qualities we desire in whomever we elect as our new governor. By doing so we will know how to appreciate and evaluate their promises once the campaign rhetoric goes into full steam.

At times we fail to recognize fully the tremendous influence that the governor exerts. To many of us, the office he represents is the voice of the community and what ever he tells us we listen to closer than to any other elected official. We respect the office of the governor. So what qualities are we to look for? The following are strictly my personal opinions and do not lean to any one candidate. Begin forming your own opinions.

My governor should be wise. He should have been seeking wisdom for a lifetime prior to trying to direct my life. By wisdom, I mean, a certain amount of accumulated knowledge about people, society, economics, and the outside world. Most of all, my governor will have honed the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships. To be wise suggests great understanding of people, of situations with unusual discernment and judgment in dealing with them. All of these qualities come from a lifetime search acquired from books and personal experience.

I want him to be a reader and a thinker. In speaking he should be concise and sincere. He should not react on gut feelings only but discern and weigh carefully his decisions. For guidance and assistance he will surround himself only with persons of similar intellectual ability and curiosity. He will see through the insincerity of sycophants and treat them accordingly. His wisdom will restrain him from making false or unfulfilled promises.

My governor must be compassionate. My governor must feel for the people he is to govern. He must understand that all men are not created economically equal and will tax them accordingly. Above all he must have a sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it. To help them improve their life style, he will initiate educational programs that will teach new skills leading to better opportunities in the workplace. He will be our “Moses” to the promised land.

He will be congenial with all levels of society and be sincere. All that he does will be for the good of the people. His behavior will serve as a role model for us to emulate. He will fulfill the role of the “hero” that we have been seeking.

My governor will be courageous. By courage, I mean my governor will possess fortitude. Once he has decided a course of action, he will battle to complete it. He will possess strength of mind and dedication to his convictions. He understands that civic courage
