Arts fest on Tinian held
The Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Office on Tinian, in cooperation with the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, sponsored the annual Mini-Arts Festival on the island over the weekend.
The two-day exhibit, which featured traditional craftmakers and artists from Saipan and Tinian, was opened by numerous traditional performers.
“This day marks another day of collaboration from the Tinian arts community, the island’s people and many others. It is important that we show our visitors the artistic aspect of our identity,” Tinian Dynasty Hotel General Manager Tom Liu said in his opening remarks.
Performers during the two-day arts festival include: Isa “Rainbow” Dancers from Saipan and the Tinian High School Choir.
Participating artists who performed actual demonstration of their craft were: Latik John (mwar-bead weaver), Evalani Lizama (leis/raku), Daniel Babauta (coconut carver), Doug Rankin (banana arts), Bernie Rankin (shell necklaces), Beverly Battaglia (mixed media), Helen Laanlayfag (coconut frond weaving/Yapese arts), Martha Bantolino (beads/shell necklaces), Jose B. King (wooden arts/crafts), Slophina Fanapin (leis/mwar) and many others.
The festival is an annual event hosted by the Tinian Arts Council to preserve and promote local artists in the community. It is also an exploration project collaborated from Saipan Arts Council to give opportunity Saipan artists to explore the possibilities of marketing their arts and crafts on Tinian.
