Former senator declares bid for Saipan mayoralty
Former Northern Mariana Islands Chief of Police, Jose Pangelinan Mafnas on Friday reasserted his intent to run for Mayor of Saipan in the November general elections.
Mr. Mafnas, a three time senator and a former vice-president of the Senate, said his main reason to run for Mayor is to give the people of Saipan the kind of public service they rightfully deserve.
He added that the Saipan Mayor’s Office too often get the “short end” of the stick in funding allocations, when it is obvious that over 80 percent of the people of the Commonwealth live on Saipan.
Mr. Mafnas has been serving the public in various capacities — Chief of Immigration, and educator and school principal.
As such, he believes that with his experience and accomplishments in the government, his maturity, and most importantly his knowledge of the people and their needs for diversified public service; his candidacy not only offers the people of Saipan a choice, but also innovation of the function of the mayor’s office.
With this, he is firmly committed to fulfilling this aspiration by declaring his intent to run for Mayor of the Municipality of Saipan as an independent candidate.
