Brother cuts infant’s finger
A three-year-old child accidentally gashed a kitchen knife into his little brother’s finger Tuesday while playing with his other siblings inside the kitchen at their Susupe home.
The one-year-old infant’s middle finger was sliced with only a scrap of skin connecting the digit to the child’s hand, police reported yesterday.
Based on a police interview with the children’s mother, it was learned that two kids with their other siblings were playing in the kitchen area when the three-year-old child, at some point, got hold of a knife.
He was apparently trying to cut a coconut lying on their playing area.
As the child was about to slice the coconut, his younger brother’s hand got caught in the way, which led to the cutting tool to instead slice through the one-year-old’s middle finger.
When the mother summoned for police assistance, authorities found the victim’s finger injured.
The injured child was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center where the mother was told by experts that the victim only had 50-50 chance of bringing the middle finger back to its original state.
Police have qualified the mishap as a child neglect case, noting that the parents should have been watching the kids while at play in the first place.
But no child neglect charges have been pressed against the guardians.
Authorities are still conducting further investigation. (MM)
