A literacy-based workshop for local caregivers of young children was held last week by Northern Marianas College teacher Julie Folta. Fourteen attendees joined in four weekly sessions to learn ways to encourage literacy skills with young children in their care.

Ms. Folta introduced the design of “home learning spaces” in which book making, creative art skills, music and drama could be used to enhance children’s language development.

The workshop provided opportunities to learn songs and fingerplays, to learn “lap reading” techniques, make puppets, make various books, and to experiment with creative artistic materials found in kitchens of the homes in which they work.
