Thousand of individuals with disabilities stand to benefit from the community living program of the Northern Marianas Housing Corporation and the CNMI Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council.

Council Executive Director Thomas J. Camacho said the Resource Guide on Consumer-owned/Controlled Housing for People with Disabilities handbook will help person with disabilities choosing accessible houses.

The resource handbook is to demonstrate strategies to provide individuals with developmental disabilities supports and identifying system barriers to self-determination under the State Plan Priority Area on Community Living.

Mr. Camacho explained that the initiative satisfies one of the Council’s State Plan Goals which would allow adults to choose where they want to live in, its availability and accessibility.

The guidebook also includes samples of documents needed when applying for a home loan and illustrations of accessible home designs in accordance to accessibility standards.

Mr. Camacho said there are available accessible and affordable homes in the CNMI for individuals with disabilities and that these are included in the housing opportunities and benefits.

Through the assistance of NMHC, persons with disabilities are placed on the priority list for home loans. American with Disabilities Act standards are to be complied with to afford consumers accessible homes.

Mr. Camacho informed consumers, advocates and individuals with disabilities on the availability of the resource guidebook to assist them in designing and choosing their future homes through affordable payment plans.
