No Ka Oi takes no ka prisoners in qualifier
The 2nd Annual Miller Lite Marianas Softball Cup made another appearance on the fields at the Oleai Sports Complex, and No Ka Oi had a repeat performance of last year’s finish, as they became tournament champions, earning the chance to represent Saipan against Guam and this year’s $500 prize.
No Ka Oi faced off against DPS in the finals of the three-day tournament and had relatively no difficulty beating them in their 26-10 victory.
This was the second time in the tourney that No Ka Oi exterminated DPS. In their first match-up, the bug killers squashed DPS, 20-2.
No Ka Oi bagged the first place trophy while DPS secured second place and High Life took third.
The defending champions from the inaugural Marianas Cup earned a first round bye when they won the title last year. Their first game of the tournament came against Brotherhood, a team that they easily dispatched by a score of 12-2.
The second game for the green truck drivers was against DPS. After they dispatched the Department, No Ka Oi went on to derail the High Life, 18-6.
DPS took a different road to the finals, first beating I Don’t Know, and losing to No Ka Oi. The team was given a second life as it entered the loser’s bracket, downing the Lite Boys and eking out a 15-13 win over the High Life.
Beginning Friday, June 4, 13 teams from all over Saipan competed for the championship and the chance to represent the island against Guam on Saturday, June 26 at the Oleai Sports Complex.
The winner of the Guam-No Ka Oi game will face the winner of the Tinian-Rota game for the 2nd Annual Miller Lite Marianas Cup championship.
According to the Saipan Softball Association President Bob Guerrero, the teams are limited to a maximum of 15 players and a female must be on the field at all times in the modified coed tourney.
