After four weeks of promoting the culinary delights of Saipan, the 2004 Taste of the Marianas is approaching its final week and is expected to go out with a bang this Saturday at the American Memorial Park Bell Tower Field.

In an interview yesterday, Ed Johnson of the Marianas Visitors Authority urges the community to take part in the finale as the event will hit new heights with a four-course Eating Contest and live dancing and music entertainment.

“We’re going to close out the event with the four-course contest, and it is open to anyone interested,” he said. “There is no entrance fee; however, only the first 15 registrants will be allowed to participate.”

Johnson said the food for the competition will be provided by the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

As with the previous four weeks, the Taste again will feature various vendors, including Keeraku Restaurant, Capricciosa/Tony Roma’s, Herman’s Modern Bakery, Hyatt Regency Hotel Saipan, Champ’s Cool Station, Chapinos, D’Elegance, Ty & Tia, Taste of India, Saipan World Resort, Pacific Islands Club, Hamilton’s Restaurant, Thai House, Poon’s Restaurant, Coral Ocean Point, Hula Girl, Aqua Resort Club, MARPAC, Pacific Trading Co., the NMI Bartenders Association, and Wine Cellar.

“Everyone seems to be having a good time and enjoying the event each week, so we’re encouraging the public to head to the [AMP] because this will be the finale for this year,” said Johnson.

The Taste kicked off on May 15 with the Bartender’s Cocktail Competition that blew the crowd away with the participants’ exciting techniques and maneuvers.

The next Saturday featured the Spicy Titiyas and Coco Making contests, while the third week showcased a pie-eating contest. Last week, members of the audience were exposed to the scent and taste of succulent servings of ribs in the Barbeque Cookoff.

All items being sold at the Taste are purchased with tokens worth $1 apiece. A money exchange booth is located within the premises.
