June 21 picked as start of Rotary caging
It’s official, the 2004 Rotary Club of Saipan Summer Youth Basketball League will kick off two Mondays from now on June 21 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Division of Sports and Recreation officer Elias Rangamar said from 12 to 14 teams are expected to suit up for this year’s 18-and-under basketball battles.
“It’s going to be big this year. It seems that a lot of players and teams are interested in competing for the championship.”
Rangamar, however, noted that he was disappointed with last Monday’s small turnout of coaches in the organization meeting set 12noon at the gym’s conference room. According to him only four coaches showed up for the meeting and none of the teams have yet to submit all of the requirements.
Rangamar insisted that entries must include team rosters, players’ proof of age, completed waiver forms, and $5 membership fee. Team must also shell out $20 for team insurance payable to AON Insurance. The cut-off date for players going on 19 years old is September 30 of this year.
He also said that the “no clinic, no coaching” rule for this year’s Rotary league still stands. DSR and BANMI decided to implement the new policy to improve the level of coaching in the league as well as familiarize teams and players on the new rules and regulations of the sport.
Rangamar, however, said that instead of conducting the coaching seminars prior to the start of the league, which was the decision earlier, DSR and BANMI would just have to do it while the league is ongoing.

Verizon Ol’Aces are the defending championships of the Rotary. Verizon won the title last Nov. 5, 2003, when the pair of Dan Barcinas and Dexter Dillay led the team in vanquishing San Antonio Sixers I, 85-81.
Verizon actually won all 14 games last year behind a solid bunch of veterans and rookies. Up-and-coming coach Lawrence Rosario mentored the team, while ex-Ol’Aces big man Ambrose Ogumoro served as his assistant coach.
