Soriano soars in Thursday pool
Jerry Soriano once again cast his magical spell on the green felt pool table winning the Miller Lite Invitational 8-Ball Tournament last Thursday at Round Two Bar and Grill.
Playing for a slimmer paycheck this time after topping the end-of-the-month big bucks tourney a week before, Soriano was no less devastating and again took the unbeaten track to the championship.
Soriano went up against fancied Boyet Sequico in his first game and dominated the crafty veteran to advance. Bert Mettao also proved no match against the defending champion in the second round.
He then made it to the winners bracket final after getting the better of Manny Mariano. Pitted against the Dean of CNMI Billiards, Soriano schooled David Peter and booked the first finals seat to bag the twice-to-beat advantage in the championship.
After watching Peter get his bearings back and beat Mariano, Soriano wasted no time in dismissing Peter and took home the championship trophy and the $85 first place purse. Peter settled for the $50 second place prize, while Mariano got $30.
Other billiards enthusiasts that took their chances in the Thursday pool event were Roger Espiritu, Roy Tereyama, Keith Howard, Jon Morris, Primo Ferrera, and Noi Olopai.
The evening of May 30 at the pioneering sports bar then saw David Peter come from behind to beat Joey Arriola in the Sunday Winner-Take-All Fun Tournament.
After getting a bye in the opening round, Peter waylaid Roger Espiritu and Jean Navarro in his first two games. But trouble came in his third trip to the pool table when Arriola outplayed him and he was relegated to the losers bracket.
Peter fought back though and triumphed against Kim Prinz to setup a return bout with Arriola. This time The Dean was more prepared and out-positioned and out-shot Arriola in two straight games to win the $55 pot.
Ken Couture, Juancho Mendoza, Donald Kapileo, Mike Cohen, Joe Shaffer, and Tony Arriola also played in the Sunday tournament.
There was no Tuesday Ladies Handicap 8-Ball Tournament last week.
