The pictures featured in this photo essay were taken from the book A Stone’s Throw from Tokyo: A Pictorial Overseas History of the 101st SEABEES, which former Sister Maria Soledad Castro of the Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz and now private citizen, Marie Soledad Castro, kindly furnished the Saipan Tribune. Castro is now an honorary member of the SEABEES.

The pictures were taken just after the Battles of Saipan and Tinian and show the 101st SEABEES going about their task of rebuilding the war-ravaged island of Saipan. Some of the people featured in the pictures are still very much around. Can you spot them?

The book’s editors, A.L. Peterson and John Newell Jr., credited Lerwell Lucas and Bill Soskin for the pictures and Paul Smith and Jewel Harrison for the darkroom work. The captions are faithfully reprinted as they are written on the book.
