As the countdown to the 60th anniversary of World War II Battles of Saipan and Tinian shortens, retired and active military personnel presence is expected to increase.

On that note, about 217 Navy personnel on board USS Gary are scheduled to arrive at 10am today at Charlie Dock. The ship is headed by Commander Bob Marin.

According to Veterans and Military Affairs Office deputy special assistant Ruth Coleman, a welcoming committee has already been set up to greet the crew.

“Everyone is welcome to take part in the greetings at the dock site; however, there will be tight security,” she said.

Coleman disclosed that the crew would be part of various commemoration events, including the marching parade on June 15 aimed at honoring veterans of the Battles of Saipan and Tinian, as well as veterans of the Pacific Theatre.

Coleman said the presence of the USS Gary during the commemoration was organized by Rear Adm. Arthur J. Johnson during his visit last week.

“I met with him [Johnson], and he is responsible for all the military participation for the commemoration of the 60th anniversary,” she said.

Aside from the group and the veterans who have arrived in previous days, more are expected, with a large group of veterans arriving tomorrow night and another group, including retired Enola Gay pilot Gen. Paul Tibbets, navigator Theodore Van Kirk, and weaponeer Morris Jeppson arriving Sunday night.

Earlier, the Hospitality Committee extended an invitation to the public to take part in the welcoming of the veterans at the Saipan International Airport.

The commemoration kicks off tomorrow and ends on June 18.
