The Big Leaguers of the Little League faced off for their final showdown as the Northern Yankees dispatched the Ol’Aces by a score of 5-2 in seven innings of highly-competitive baseball action at the Francisco M. Palacios field this past Saturday.

Yankees’ pitcher Jesse Agulto demonstrated that the numbers didn’t lie this season, as he led his team to victory the same way he led the league all season with the lowest earned run average (1.20).

It was a little rough in the beginning for the Yankees ace, as he gave up a single to Luis Iguel that scored Jack Lizama for the Ol’ Aces, and lost control of a pitch that allowed Iguel to cross the plate as well.

After faltering, he was able to maintain his composure, shutting the Aces down for the rest of the game.

The Northern Yankees provided enough offense for their starter to stay a step ahead of the pin stripers, but it was the Ol’Aces who did damage unto themselves early. Pitcher Charles Mesik, one of the top five in the league, walked Ricky Jones with the bases loaded, allowing Roger Salem to score the first run for the Aces.

Salem played another role in the Yankees scoring when his double in the second inning brought Ben Jones home to tie the game at two apiece.

Tyrone Fitial came in to pitch in relief of Mesik in the third, and the Yanks took advantage. Heads-up base running by Agulto and Bill Benevente got the Yankees a two-run lead, as they crossed the plate courtesy of a pair of wild pitches.

Ben Jones added a little insurance in the sixth for the Yankees, getting a base hit, stealing second, and stomping in home courtesy of a throwing error.

Agulto blanked the Aces in the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh to get the Yankees the first place title. The Ol’Aces took second, while the Tai Hu Sharks took third. The Sharks were able to achieve third rather easily because their opponents failed to meet the required number of players at game time.
