150 people participate in Freedom Run
Freedom Run attracted an estimated 150 people to the Beach Road pathway early Saturday morning in an event organized by the Liberation Committee.
Participants were bright and early as they took the route from Oleai Pavilion pathway to the 13 Fishermen Monument and back.
Radio stations Power 99 and the Rock 97.9 were on hand to support the runners. “Our station was there to give them [participants] support. We are very happy with the turnout and the sponsors were, too,” said Tina Palacios from Power 99.
The event was supposed to take place July 4 but was postponed due to the typhoon, which left the committee with two weeks of planning.
“We were happy with the turnout. We thought that the people would not join because it was postponed,” Tina added.
A total of 400 t-shirts and 200 umbrellas were given away to the participants. Refreshments were also given to the runners at the finish point.
According to Victor Cepeda, chairperson for the Liberation Committee and staff of the Saipan Mayor’s Office, another Freedom Run event is being organized.
“The people really enjoyed it. They were requesting that this should be done more. The Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety was there and he supported the run,” said Cepeda. (Cassie DLG Fejeran)
