G-Rollers I gets stroll in the park against Sixers II
Garapan Rollers I made mincemeat of their opponent but their sister teams were not as fortunate as the 14th season of the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League resumed Monday and Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Fresh from annexing the 2004 IVYBL championship Friday, G-Rollers I got a big lift from former 14-and-under stalwarts Joe Acosta and Lester Babauta.
G-Rollers I took the first half 45-19 and then cruised to the 105-46 victory. Acosta top-scored for the Joe Diaz-coached team with 18 points, while Babauta added 15. Bill Kaipat also chipped in 16.
Reiner Ferrer paced Sixers II’s losing cause with 17 points, while Emery Palacios pumped in 10.
Garapan Rollers II failed to make it two-for-two, however, for the evening when it was routed by the 69ers I 92-60 in the nightcap.
The boys of coach Ray Duenas started like a house on fire and took the half 43-29. They then finished off the job with another terrific second half en route to the 32-point triumph.
The 69ers were led by Shawn Fujihira’s 34 points, while last year’s Rotary scoring champ Josh Sablan drilled in 27.
Arvin Avila and Philip Cequena finished with 12 points apiece to lead G-Rollers II.
On Tuesday, the Chalan Kanoa Saints were pushed to the limit by a young but determined 69ers II team but prevailed 93-88.
The Saints were ahead 47-39 at the turn but the 69ers kept coming back in the second half before brothers Luis and L.J. Reyes of the Saints finally put the game away in the closing minutes.
L.J. was the highpoint man for the Saints with 27, while Luis was good for 24. 69ers’ Bill Babauta punctured the hoops with 27 markers, while IVYBL scoring champ Preston Basa soared for 22.
In the second game, darkhorse Makos gave Garapan its second beating in as many days after whipping G-Rollers III 81-40.
Former swimmer Quincy Johnson scored 26 points in the victory with Seth Hawkins in able support with 22. Rick Basila’s 13 points led Garapan.
