Reyes is queen of the lanes for September
Becky Reyes overcame a mediocre third game and repulsed a late charge by Elena Soll to win the women’s division of the September Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament held last Sunday and Monday at the Saipan Bowling Center.
Reyes opened her four-games series last Monday with a splash, rolling a score of 199 that put notice her intention of going all the way. She followed that up with another strong performance in her second game, knocking down 189 pins that further built her lead.
But Reyes encountered some trouble in her third game. Not getting the right grip on the bowling ball, she struggled for a 142, which all but opened up the door for Soll.
Luckily for Reyes, she recovered in the fourth game, firing a relatively good score of 181 to hold off the competition. In all, Reyes rolled a four-game series total of 711 and finished with a 177.75 pinfall average.
Soll, who also played Monday, had to settle for second best for the month despite bowling an impressive 216 in her fourth and final game. But what really hurt her chances was the 139 she rolled in her very first game. Soll also had games of 174 and 167 and finished with a pinfall total of 696, which was good enough for a 174 average.
First-day leader Emi Williams was third with a series total of 684 and 171 pinfall per game average. She put together games of 176, 148, 159, and 201 when she rolled off Sunday.
Fourth and fifth place went to Malou Cabigao and Diane Camacho, who each wound up with pinfall totals of 655 and 649, respectively. Cabigao averaged 163.75 after putting up scores of 167, 187, 164, and 137 last Sunday, while Camacho went on to a norm 162.25 after bowling games of 155, 152, 197, and 155 on Monday.
The rest of the top 10, with their scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Ron Cal (647); Cora Muna (637); Lala Taitano (637); Diane Babauta (601) and Carol McKenzie (591).
The September Pepsi King of the Lanes Tournament attracted a total of 63 entries. The monthly bowling competition is organized by the Saipan Bowling Association and is sponsored by Pacific Trading Co. It will culminate with a season-ending championship tournament in January.
