Lights on the way for track and field
The long hot days of running in the sun may be over for the participants of Saipan’s track and field events, as runners, jumpers, and hurlers might soon have the benefit of competing in their meets at night.
According to Elias Rangamar of the Northern Marianas Track and Field Federation, plans are already in the works to install lights at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
“The money for the lights has already been allocated by the government, and right now the contract [for the installation] is in the bidding process.”
The prospect of evening track and field meets contains a number of benefits to the NMITFF and the community. For one, the nighttime schedules will hopefully attract more spectators, as parents will have a better opportunity to attend their children’s events. The lights will also provide for a safer practice environment, as many people take advantage of the state of the art facility after dusk, according to Rangamar.
Having the events at night may also cut down on the possibility of temperature-related injuries, and dehydration, he also added.
