Shag evens up the Rocball finals
After a fast and furious Game 1in which they lost by a mere three points, Shag bounced back to down the Ghasias Brothers 70-61 in Game 2 of the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League championships.
The Brothers took the court with confidence at the Marianas High School Gymnasium having earned a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series on Thursday evening, and that may have been the deciding factor in their 16-15 win in the opening set.
After a little pep talk, Shag returned to big blue on a mission to even up the set count. The regular season runner-ups were able to just that with a fierce opening salvo that included a goal by Mike Olaitiman. Shag edged the Brothers 18-6 to make the overall score 33-22 in their favor as they headed into the third set.
The GB5 wasn’t the undefeated undisputed regular season champion because they ran from a challenge, and they proved that they were focused on the prize with a 17-11 win in the third set.
The Brothers were getting a ton of points from the corner stone of their offense, Freddy Pelisamen. FP-diddy racked up five kees for the Brothers, but heading into the fourth and final set, they were down 44-39 to Shag.
The devastating loss in the second set proved to be worse than it originally appeared because the Brothers needed to win the final set by at least eight points to take the game. As it worked out, the Brothers were able to score 12 to the Shag’s 16.
Since Shag was able to win the last set with an advantage of more than three points, they were able to “Juice Out” to tie the series at a game apiece.
Overall, the Shag scored nine aces, 12 kees and a goal, compared to one aces, 13 kees and a xunk by the Ghasias Brothers.
The Shag also had the game’s standout, as Kashi Kubbun was named the heavy hitter, scoring three aces and five kees to lead his team in the victory with 16 points, while teammate Mike Olaitiman piled on three aces, three kees, and a goal for 15 points.
Game 3 of the best-of-five Rocball finals takes place on Monday at 5pm in the air-conditioned comforts of the MHS Gymnasium.
