Incumbent President Tommy Remengesau Jr. and vice presidential candidate Camsek Elias Chin dominated the polls from Saipan and Guam, garnering strong support from the two areas that were granted polling boxes for the 2004 Republic of Palau general elections.

The unofficial count also shows that majority of Saipan voters were in favor of Remengesau, with 81 percent voting for the incumbent president. Of the 531 residents who cast votes, 428 voted for Remengesau, while 98 voted for fellow candidate Polycorp Basilius.

Remengesau also had the edge on Guam, garnering 628 votes compared with the 228 for Basilius.

The current count indicates Remengesau garnering a total of 6,259 votes, or 65 percent of the total votes, and 3,139 votes ahead of Basilius, who currently has 3,120 votes to his name.

Like Remengesau, Chin was victorious on Saipan and Guam.

On Saipan, the former justice minister received 402 votes, or 68 percent of all votes. Incumbent vice president Sandra Pierantozzi received 181 votes from Palau residents on the island.

Chin also received 64 percent of all votes on Guam, getting 562 votes while Pierantozzi had 295 votes.

Chin currently leads Pierantozzi by about 3,957 votes, garnering 6,683 votes compared with Pierantozzi’s 2,726 votes.

According to the Palau Consulate Office on Saipan, all votes have been tallied except for absentee ballots, which would be counted today, Nov. 9. The election commission has until Nov. 17 to finalize and certify the results.

Only 500 absentee ballots are being awaited.

Votes on Saipan and Guam, as well as Hawaii, were cast on Oct. 30.

The election also featured other offices, as well as amendments to the Palau constitution.
