Teams from Guam’s Southern Youth Basketball Association showed Saipan opponents no mercy Monday in the second day of basketball competition in the 3rd Annual Pacific Rim Youth Goodwill Tournament at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium Monday.

In the first game, SYBA’s 14-and-under squad mauled a raw Garapan Rollers II team, 85-15, in the lone juniors game of the day. The Guamanians thundered out of the gates and led 23-4 after the opening quarter and 41-11 at the half.

SYBA finished the job by limiting G-Rollers II to a mere four points in the second half and gave the rest of the field something to think about.

Dominic Sablan, on his lonesome, exceeded the final score of G-Rollers II with 22 points, while Edgardo Baza and Jonathan Fayton added 19 and 14 points, respectively.

In the second game, SYBA’s 18-and-under squad kept up with the day’s theme by bludgeoning G-Rollers III, 124-35, in the seniors division.

SYBA outscored the Garapan village team 38-8 in the first canto and never looked back, as the Guam all-star squad showed that it is indeed one of the teams to beat in the tournament.

Zach Sanchez and Javis Duenas scored 17 points apiece and were only two of five SYBA players to break into the double digits.

In the third game, Sparks I kept Garapan winless when they survived a fourth quarter uprising to turn back G-Rollers II 61-53.

Benjamin Jones, Jr. was the high scorer for Sparks I with 15 points, while Mario Patrinos added 13 points. Richard Magcalas and Kevin Aldan led G-Rollers II with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

A team from Garapan finally notched a win when G-Rollers I found itself on the better side of a rout, beating Guam’s Merizo team 97-57.

Youth standout Pete Iguel was a wizard with the spheroid and topscored for G-Rollers I with 19 points. Merizo’s hulking 6’4” center Jeff Mulligan led the team with 20 points.
